They met at the Margazhi music season in Chennai, sharing the last two seats at a dawn nadaswaram concert; she knew every raga, he knew which sabha canteen had the best filter coffee, and they have argued happily about both ever since.

Illustrated Tamil muhurtham in the front courtyard of a Chettinad mansion: on a tiled dais between jasmine-wound teak pillars, the groom ties the thaali on its turmeric-yellow thread round the bride’s neck as she sits in a red Kanjivaram beside a small homam, his sister waiting behind her, a priest and nadaswaram and thavil players at the sides, and relatives tossing rice from the courtyard.

Like rain on red earth, our loving hearts have mingled into one.

Illustrated Tamil nalangu games in the sunlit inner courtyard of a Chettinad mansion: the newlyweds sit facing each other on a grass mat inside a white kolam, the bride in a mango-yellow Kanjivaram rolling a coconut to the laughing groom, while women of both families clap and sing around them under teak pillars hung with thombai festoons.

A rolled coconut, a broken appalam, and the whole family keeping score.

Illustrated Tamil wedding reception at night before a mint-plastered Chettinad mansion: the newlyweds, she in a peacock-blue Kanjivaram and he in a teak-brown bandhgala, greet an elderly couple climbing the steps with a gift, framed by a teak colonnade and an open carved door glowing with warm light, above a white kolam forecourt lined with small brass oil lamps.

Kolams at the gate, jasmine in the air, and a seat saved for you.
