Inaya restores old Deccani manuscripts at a city library, and Rayyan, an engineer, walked in one monsoon afternoon looking for his great-grandfather’s book of Urdu poems; she found it on the third visit, and he kept coming back after that.

Illustrated Hyderabadi Manjha in an old-city courtyard: the bride in soft yellow with flower jewellery sits on a low chowki while two women smooth turmeric ubtan onto her palm and cheek, a woman plays the dholak, others clap and sing, and a grandmother watches beneath three cusped jade-doored arches.

Ubtan, jasmine and old Deccani songs: the women of the house get her ready.

Illustrated Hyderabadi Nikah under a white canopy in late-afternoon light: the groom in an ivory sherwani and a jasmine sehra sits facing the elderly qazi and two witnesses, while across a sheer screen of jasmine strings the bride in a rose-and-gold khada dupatta and pearl satlada sits among the women of her family.

Two families, one promise, spoken softly in a courtyard full of jasmine.

Illustrated Hyderabadi Walima at night in a fountain garden: the couple, she in a jade gharara and pearl satlada and he in a black sherwani with silver vines, sit together on a low takht in a glowing white pavilion, while families dine along both banks of a lantern-lit channel and a cook opens a copper deg of biryani.

Dum biryani, double ka meetha, and both our families at one dastarkhwan.
